Civil and Political Rights
Our Civil and Political Rights Unit undertakes research, teaching, training and consultancy work on civil and political rights. It focuses on the international human rights instruments and mechanisms that are concerned with civil and political rights.
Members of the Civil and Political Rights Unit explore the development and application of civil and political rights within international and domestic legal frameworks. The unit has previously engaged with issues relating to human rights law and the law of armed conflict, with a particular focus on how legal standards are interpreted and applied in practice by state actors and institutions.
The unit has worked with government bodies and practitioners to support the development of human rights training and education. This includes the creation of online human rights materials for staff of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, supplemented by seminars delivered in conjunction with the Centre for Political and Diplomatic Studies.
Members of the unit have also contributed directly to government practice, including through secondments to legal advisory bodies.
