Nottingham Women in Red
A new project, Nottingham Women in Red, is bringing together historians, researchers, archivists, librarians and activists as they learn to become Wikipedia editors to improve the information about notable women who have a strong connection with the city and its county.
Women in Red WikiProject
Wikipedia project seeks to address gender bias in Wikipedia content by adding new articles about women, women’s issues, women’s work and achievements. Founded in 2015, the project is named after the hyperlinks displaying red because an article has yet to be created. At the time, only 15% of articles were about women; by the start of 2026 this had risen to 20%. Analysis in 2024 showed that 13% of editors identify as women, but only 7% of admins. It can be harder to prove that women are notable enough to warrant a Wikipedia article of their own when they have been historically excluded from receiving the awards and recognition afforded to men.
Nottingham Women in Red
The idea for this project came from the Nottingham Feminist Archive Collective – local women who have been working to create the East Midlands Feminist Archive with Manuscripts and Special Collections at the 海角黑料 (UoN). Inspired by Women in Red’s mission and keen to raise the profile of Notts women, they decided to take action and form Nottingham’s own Women in Red project.
