Rob Temple, Freelance journalist and author
English and Philosophy BA graduate (2005)
They’re both about how we live our lives. Philosophy is the most concentrated version of that, and English is the poetic version. If you want to write a book, then usually you need to know how people think.

Olivia French, Marketing and Communications Manager, HarperCollins
English with Creative Writing BA graduate (2014)
One of the skills that’s definitely useful in my job, is knowing how to communicate with different stakeholders. If I’m talking to an editor about a book, I’m going to have a different conversation with them than I would have with the author.

Matt Jones, Head of Bran at FanVue (Creator Economy and AI)
BA English and Creative Writing (2017)
I have worked in London as a strategist and content writer in advertising, for big clients like Warner Brothers , Santander Bank, EON Energy and others. It all stemmed from creative writing though, I just layered those skills with other skills around marketing and online content. Overall I’d really recommend every student uses their writing as a skill base but then stays abreast of new technology and how content is created and used, as it’s ever changing. With those two things they can do all sorts.
Katie Baxter, Freelance Producer and Sound Designer
BA English and Creative Writing (2018)
Since graduating in 2018, I’ve built a career in audio production, working on hit podcasts like JaackMaate’s Happy Hour and Counter Pressed, and creating content for leading brands including NTS Radio, Spotify, and Capital. I’ve just been selected by the BBC for their Sound First talent development scheme for sound designers (September 2025). My degree in Creative Writing gave me essential skills in ideation, scripting, and editing - which are all skills that have become the foundation of my career in media.
Megan Bull, Freelance Entertainment and Lifestyle Journalist (published in HELLO! Magazine and Radio Times)
BA English and Creative Writing (2019)
Studying English and Creative Writing strengthened my abilities as a storyteller and allowed me to experiment with different styles, while developing my own. Throughout the course, I honed my critical thinking and research skills, too, which, as a journalist, is key when reporting on breaking news.
