Ellen Daunt, Senior Manager for an Education Charity

emmad2

Ellen graduated from BA English. She now works as a Senior Manager for an educational charity. She discusses her experience as a student in English, and how the opportunities gained from her degree helped in her career.

The variety of modules to explore my interests and learn new things was what stood out to me about the School of English.

Range of module choices

"The medieval modules introduced me to new literature, new languages and a period of English I had rarely encountered in my secondary education. Name-Studies was a particular highlight for me. It is not something you can study at most universities and was an entirely new area for me, and it quickly became my favourite part of the degree. Studying place-names offered a way to apply my language skills in a different way and bridge the gap between the medieval period and now, making me look at my hometown (and everywhere I've visited since) with a completely new perspective."

Opportunity for growth

"Taking part in the Vikings for School project was a brilliant opportunity for me to gain experience with young people and explore career options in Education. I gained practical knowledge about working in schools, with children and teachers, as well as developing leadership through designing workshop resources and leading a team of volunteers to deliver the programme.

As a senior manager for an education charity, studying these modules and taking part in the schools project greatly developed my communication skills, leadership and critical thinking, which have been essential to gaining a graduate role and for my continued career progression."
