Now is the time to tell use which subjects and modules you want to study. We need to know before you arrive so that we can allocate you to appropriate peer mentor and personal tutor groups and also to make sure your timetable is visible when you start.     

There are two levels of choice you will need to make – subjects and modules    

• All students need to select a stream (combination of three subjects) to study – you will select these before you arrive to allow them to be added to your timetable. Some students will have all compulsory modules in their stream, so once you have chosen your stream, all of your modules can be entered into the system.  

• Some students will also need to select which specialisms of a subject they want to study or choose optional modules within a subject on their stream – you will select these before you arrive to allow them to be added onto your timetable.

Use the guide below to find information on the streams and their requirements, the modules available and advice to help you decide which stream, specialism and modules are the right choice for you.  

There is an information session in the first week and you will be able to make changes at this stage if you change your mind about stream, specialism or modules. 

You need to select your stream and any modules using the form below by 5pm on Thursday 27 August.

We have created a workshop to help you to prepare for starting the Natural Sciences course at Nottingham. This workshop can be done in your own time and will be available from the beginning of August and should be completed before Welcome Week.

The aim of this workshop is to:  

• Introduce you to some key skills that will help you to adapt to your new life in Nottingham  

• Familiarise you with the campus environment and opportunities to get involved and meet people during your course  

• Provide an overview of how the university is organised and some of the terminology you will encounter here 

• Explain a few things about your relationship with the university and expectations of you as a student

Getting familiar with Nottingham systems 

It can be overwhelming when you start university to get familiar with all of the systems used to communicate with you and finding the information you need in the first few weeks. You will need to be able to use some of these university systems from day one and will be directed to these for information. To give you the best start, we have created the guide below to provide you with an introduction to some of the systems you need to use when you get here. 

Moodle is the university's virtual learning environment (VLE). After you have registered you will be able to access Moodle from the next working day.  

Each module on your course will have its own Moodle page, which will contain lecture handouts and recordings, assessment information, and all the information you’ll need for that module. Please note it may take up to three days after you have registered for your mandatory modules to appear.

Once you have met your offer and been accepted onto the course, you will be added onto the Welcome Week Moodle Page so that you can access this once you have completed your online registration. This page includes all of the information you need for welcome week including the schedule and links to further resources. It will continue to be updated throughout the week with additional information, such as forms you need to complete as well as recordings and slides from sessions.  Once you can access Moodle, it is worth having a look around and familiarise yourself with the platform and explore some of the resources and information available.

We like to give you the opportunity to get involved with the course and get to know each other before you arrive. Join the WhatsApp community to chat to other students starting natural sciences this year as well as the peer mentors and NatSciSoc committee who are also in this chat. 

Ask questions to current students

Our mentors will be hosting an online live chat on 1 September, 5-6.30pm.

This will give you the chance to find out more about what to expect when arrive in halls and over the first couple of weeks, ask any questions you have about what to bring, how to prepare for starting university and tips about how to make the most of your experience.

If you can’t make it to the session, we will be running a Q&A through Instagram highlights from the end of August to the start of the year.

Welcome Week is designed to cover the most important information you need to get started on your programme at Nottingham. It also provides opportunities to meet key people involved with your learning including course staff, teaching staff, tutors, advisors, peer mentors, students from other years of the programme and your fellow first year Natural Sciences students.  

There is a mixture of talks, interactive sessions, and social sessions throughout the week to give you the maximum opportunity to get to know about the course and each other. Remember for Natural Sciences, after the first week you will not always all be together in classes, so it is important to get to know your course mates during this time.
