Wellbeing, Health and Social Care Research Centre

Welcome to the Wellbeing, Health, and Social Care Research (WHSCR) Centre

The Wellbeing, Health, and Social Care Research Centre (WHSCR) brings together researchers committed to tackling health and care inequities and strengthening prevention-led, community-based systems.

About Us

We generate collaborative research that connects theory, policy, communities, and frontline practice to improve the lives of children, young people, families, and vulnerable adults in the UK and internationally.

Our work centres lived experience, supports early intervention, and advances socially just approaches to health and social care. Through strong partnerships with practitioners, policymakers, and communities, we translate research into meaningful change.

Our vision

A society in which health and social care systems are equitable, prevention-focused and community-centred; enabling children, families and vulnerable adults to thrive.

Our mission

At WHSCR, our mission is to generate impactful, interdisciplinary research that:

  • Reduces health and care inequities
  • Advances prevention and early intervention
  • Strengthens community-based and place-based health and care practices
  • Centres lived experience - foregrounding voices that are traditionally silenced in research, and promoting innovative methodologies
  • Influences policy and improves professional practice

WHSCR is championing creativity in research, and this year hosted a roundtable on Creative Methods, a workshop on LEGO® Serious Play. Author and academic Dr Jessica J. Lee will lead workshops on creative non-fiction writing to help colleagues disseminate research findings beyond academia.

Latest news

WHSCR is playing an active role in the Faculty of Social Sciences’ research focus on climate, environment, and health. In June, we’ll contribute to an event dedicated to creative research methods, and host a LEGO Serious Play workshop. This session is designed to support colleagues in adopting creative and inclusive research practices, particularly in areas related to climate, environment, and health.
