Join our community 

Here in the School of English, we celebrate our active and diverse community of academics, students and staff. 

Below, you can read about some of the activities that take place in the School, and how you can stay connected with other students at the university.

Societies and Placements 
 

Join one (or more) or our 250 plus societies and neworks, including subject-based societies to meet with others with a passion for poetry, drama, creative writing and more. 

Here's a few examples: 

  • New Theatre (student-run theatre on University Park 
  • English Society
  • Poetry Society 
  • Creative Writers 

You can also join our unique initiatives working with the local community and wider University. Fancy teaching school children all about Vikings? Maybe you want to write for our Impact magazine, or host a radio programme? 

You can volunteer for these opportunities, or have the chance to join them through placement so that you can make the most of your experience. 

Events 
 

Each year, our Education and Student Experience team organise a series of events just for Arts students. These events are designed to enable you to mix with other students from English and other departments, build your community, and try something different! 

Examples of our previous events include:

Opportunities
 

Throughout your studies, you will have different opportunities to explore, learn and meet other students from across the university. This includes mixing with other international students at the Global Café, honing your academic research and writing skills, and collaborate with our academics on their various research projects.
