From 19 to 26 April, the Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI) marked UN Chinese Language Day with a lively week of events, bringing Chinese language, cinema, and culture to audiences in Nottingham and London.
The celebrations kicked off with two Chinese film screenings at Broadway Cinema in Nottingham. On 19 April, action-thriller The Shadow's Edge drew in crowds, followed on 26 April by Black Dog, the Cannes Un Certain Regard award-winning drama. Nearly 200 people — including NCI students and local residents — attended. Audience members praised both films for their gripping stories and for offering a genuine glimpse into contemporary Chinese life.
On 22 April, NCI took the celebrations into schools. At Arnbrook Primary School in Nottingham, 30 Year 5 pupils travelled back in time to explore the ancient Shang dynasty and oracle bone script. The students then created their own oracle-bone-inspired fan paintings — a hit with both children and teachers.
That same day, NCI joined a major UK-wide UN Chinese Language Day event at Highgate Junior School in London, hosted by the British Chinese Bridge Club and the British Chinese Language Examination Committee. More than 100 students and teachers took part. NCI's "Giant Panda" origami bookmark workshop, filled with purple decorations and cheerful energy, proved especially popular among the young learners.
From film enthusiasts to primary school pupils, NCI's events offered a warm, engaging, and memorable celebration of Chinese language and culture — with more to come in the future.
