Services for Students
The Careers and Employability Service at the University provides support and advice for students in building their careers, right from the start of their student journeys, supporting the skills and practice that they gain within the curriculum. Here are just some of the ways that the School of Computer Science and the Careers and Employability Service work together to help prepare students for their future careers:
- Talks arranged for each year group remind students of the services available and encourage engagement with services aimed at their student stage.
- In-curriculum support for writing CVs, making pitches, and soft skills such as team working, communication and professionalism which employers value highly.
- Opportunities to work with industrial partners on projects that they supervise, helping students to gain an understanding of the workplace and industrial mindset.
- Support for students taking a year in industry, where they gain experience of their possible future working environment.
- Weekly in-person and online careers support drop-in events provide individualised support for specific student needs and/or answer quick questions.
- Bookable careers appointments with experienced careers advisors, providing more in-depth support or careers advice on such things as potential career paths, CV review, interview skills and advice, or opportunities to discuss any other careers needs that the student may have.
- Online resources allowing students to easily access information or FAQs to help their decision making, covering graduate jobs, work experience, choosing your career, making applications and focused support for students about to graduate. Most have step by step guides, helping students to work through things prior to potentially making a careers appointment.
- A regular series of centrally-organised events at the University level, throughout the year, with talks and workshops covering things such as CV and application writing, employer talks, interview skills, personal brand, resilience, how to talk about your experience, insights into different careers areas, employers giving insights into their companies, and much more.
