Industrial Economics
We are dedicated to advancing understanding of the economic forces that shape policy, industry and business behaviour. Through rigorous research and innovative approaches, we equip graduates with the analytical skills needed to contribute to a sustainable and evolving economy.
The Department of Industrial Economics is the only department of its kind in the UK, with nearly 75 years of expertise in analysing how markets, firms and policymakers influence economic outcomes. Our team brings together specialists in competition, innovation, behavioural economics, sustainability and industrial policy, applying robust economic research to real world issues.
Our research addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing modern economies, including digital markets and consumer data, biodiversity finance, regional productivity and the role of the state in economic development. This research supports businesses, government bodies and wider society by informing better decisions and more effective policy.
We are home to the unique BSc Industrial Economics, a well established degree that combines economic theory with insight into firm behaviour and global markets. Students benefit from an integrated curriculum and opportunities to connect with practitioners, industry partners and a strong alumni community.
Our strategic focus is to strengthen our research impact and deepen engagement with employers and external partners, expanding real world collaboration and creating opportunities that help our students become competitive and successful graduates.
The Industrial Economics Department is concerned with the application of economic analysis to understanding firm behaviour, corporate decision-making, and the business environment. Our students use their analytical skills to make valuable contributions to society with their work in government, business, and charities.
