Biography

Amelia joined the university in 2020 to undertake her PhD in equine end-of-life care decision-making, funded by The Horse Trust. Through this project she developed the TRUSTED resources to support horse owners and vets communicate about difficult topics, and make plans to promote positive health and welfare throughout their horses' lives, up to and including end-of-life. Amelia is continuing this work as a postdoctoral researcher, working on refining and improving the resources. She was successful in applying for a fellowship position, funded by the Morris Animal Foundation, to trial and implement the resources in veterinary practices across the UK. She has received positive feedback from both owners and vets, and is now developing plans to implement and disseminate the TRUSTED resources more widely, to allow, vet teams, owners and their horses beyond the study to benefit.

Prior to joining the university, Amelia completed a BSc in Animal Behaviour and Welfare Science, and a research masters investigating horse owners' experiences of using restricted grazing methods to manage their horses' health, and impact of these methods on equine behaviour and welfare. She completed both at the University of Bristol, where she went on to work as a research technician on a project investigating how changes in animal affective state (and hence welfare) influence behaviour in judgement bias tasks.
