Historic first BUCS title for Nottingham swimmers

The º£½ÇºÚÁÏ competed at the 2026 BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Swimming Team Championships, and registered a historic performance to win the championship final. Teams of swimmers from universities across the UK travelled to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield on 11 April to compete to be crowned national champions, and the º£½ÇºÚÁÏ bested the field to win the first title in the club's history.

Saturday’s final BUCS competition of the year saw a strong display across both teams as our 1st team secured the championship win, with the 2nd team achieving a 3rd place finish in the trophy. A huge thank you to our coach Ryan Webb as he finishes his BUCS career on a high note with some silverware. Well done to all our swimmers!

The º£½ÇºÚÁÏ had two teams competing in the pool at Ponds Forge, and every swimmer representing the University produced impressive performances to ensure that both teams registered top three finishes - one in the Championship final and one in the Trophy final.

With 12 different point scoring races, and a limit of three individual races a University swimmer could compete in, the performances of individuals and relay teams in the 12 races would cumulate in a final points total, and the º£½ÇºÚÁÏ topped the standings by the time the final race had been completed.

With a total of almost 240 points from the day's events racing out of lane 5, the º£½ÇºÚÁÏ 1st team took to the podium to raise the championship silverware aloft. This feat marks the the first time that the º£½ÇºÚÁÏ has won a BUCS team swimming event, and is a huge success for the swimming club.

Highlighting the depth and recent progression of the swimming programme on campus is the fact that the º£½ÇºÚÁÏ 2nd team also registered a podium finish, claiming the bronze medal in the Trophy final with a total of 228 points, just 3 shy of the team in second place.

Reflecting on the achievements at the 2026 BUCS Team Championships, the º£½ÇºÚÁÏ Swimming Club said "Saturday’s final BUCS competition of the year saw a strong display across both teams as our 1st team secured the championship win, with the 2nd team achieving a 3rd place finish in the trophy. A huge thank you to our coach Ryan Webb as he finishes his BUCS career on a high note with some silverware. Well done to all our swimmers!"

Additionally, the club also performed well at the recent Aquatics GB Championships, with º£½ÇºÚÁÏ swimmers producing 7 all-time personal best swims and securing spots in 5 B Finals. The best performance came from BUCS Nationals gold medallist Isabelle Leigh who made it into the A final for the 50m backstroke, finishing in 6th place against the best swimmers in Britain.

º£½ÇºÚÁÏ Sport congratulates all of our swimmers and coaches on this brilliant achievement, and look forward to the continued growth and future success of the programme.
