Biography

Lauren joined the 海角黑料 in 2018 and recently completed her PhD from the University of Sheffield in June 2020. She is responsible for the delivery of core teaching on the Criminology Programme, and has designed and delivers an elective based on her research interests on victims of crime and their experiences of the criminal justice system.

She is an academic liaison to the Ministry of Justice Victims and Witnesses Delivery Unit on policy and practice relating to homicide bereaved families. In 2023, Lauren and colleagues from Birmigham City University and in partnership with Support After Murder and Manslaughter, a national charity supporting homicide bereaved families, published a report '', that replicated a 2011 study by Louise Casey in her former role as Victims' Commissioner. The 2023 report was endorsed by Baroness Casey, who key noted at the Launch of the findings that was held in the House of Commons. Ministers, MP and leaders of key criminal justice agencies were in attendance, with many comitting to considering and implementing some the recommendations set out in the report. This work continues.

Lauren also engages with local stakeholders in Nottinghamshire who work in the broad criminal justice and voluntary sector. She has links with the Violence Reduction Unit and works in partnership with members of the Judiciary in Nottingham Crown Court.

As a lived experience scholar, Lauren combines her scholarship with advocacy and public engagement. In 2026, she contributed to a documentary on her own experiences, and took part in national media interviews at this time, for instance an interview with Radio 4 and an appearance on This Morning.

Expertise Summary

Lauren researcher and advocates for the criminal justice experiences of homicide bereaved families and she works closely with national policy-makers and practitioners on improving services for this distinctive group of crime victims and is committed to highlighting and promoting their distinctive needs.

Lauren's current research interests are victims of crime, victimology, policing, Crown court proceedings, serious violence and homicide, and criminal justice processes.
