This was used to find out more about the challenges faced by employees who are carers and their awareness of the support currently available. The questionnaire was completed by 58 members of staff. Who do you care for?  How long have you been caring for the person?  Does the person you care for live with you?  How many hours per week are you the main carer?  What is your staff group?  How many hours do you work per week?  Total number of hours worked at work and as a carer  How aware are you of your legal rights/University policies/Universitys services?  Are your work colleagues/ manager aware that you are a carer?  For those who answered yes to the previous question How supportive are your colleagues/ manager of your caring role?  Anonymous comments It is difficult being up at night on call for her via the lifeline system and then being at work on time. If I am late leaving work she doesnt get her evening meal until late. I may get called at work if there is a problem. I work at home in the evenings to make sure I keep up to date with my job. Weekends are spent doing necessary activities for her and so have little time to relax. Flexible working arrangements of department make it easier, i.e. can work at home, complete work out of working hours, attend school meetings etc At the moment it is very difficult. I constantly feel tired and exhausted. It is difficult to keep up with everything. I manage but am tired and worry about neglecting my own children. Being able to work flexible hours is vital. Even if I am not required to provide practical care, there are many ongoing issues and stresses which occur during a persons lengthy illness that overall lead the carer to feeling burned out after a while. This results from constantly having the needs of another person or people in the back of your mind. In the past this has taken its toll on my health and also inevitably has affected my prospects for promotion. With elderly parents who are ill you are never really 'off duty'. Guilt both with my employer and my parents in not being able to give 100 percent. Very mentally tiring, trying to give them enough 'time' is difficult when having to work full time and fit in time for yourself. The loneliness of caring for someone, feeling that other people do not understand the pressures you are under. Relentless responsibility can be physically and emotionally draining. I have reduced my hours and taken a less responsible role which has affected my job satisfaction. Difficult to take part in full-time activities e.g. lunchtimes or out of normal hours or to attend meetings away from Nottingham. Worry that colleagues my feel I am not pulling my weight or that they tire of my problems. Financial difficulties. Lack of information e.g. social services. Concentrating on work at times. Concentrating on home at times. Coping with depression.
