Expertise summary

I specialise in human nutrition, obesity, and weight‑related health. My work focuses on how diet influences metabolic health, how we understand and communicate about weight, and how weight stigma affects healthcare. I also teach and research across physiology, early life nutrition, the microbiome and the developmental origins of health and disease. I have a strong interest in supporting the public to make sense of nutrition science, and in helping healthcare professionals deliver inclusive, evidence‑based care.

I can provide expert commentary on a broad range of issues including: Nutrition and diet trends Obesity, weight management and the science of weight Weight stigma, bias, and the impact on healthcare The use and misuse of BMI and other health metrics Supplements, wellness claims, and evidence‑based nutrition advice Metabolism, energy balance, appetite and eating behaviour The gut microbiome and its role in health, nutrition, and metabolism Childhood nutrition and early life influences on long‑term health Public understanding of nutrition and common misunderstandings Medical education, especially inclusive curriculum design.

I have been interviewed on national and local radio, including BBC Radio 5 Live, where I discussed the use of BMI as a health metric. I have also appeared on BBC Radio Lincolnshire to discuss nutrition and cancer for British Science Week. In print and online media, I have written multiple articles for The Conversation, on nutrition, weight, health, weight loss, and supplements, and I am a contributor for The Independent, where I provide evidence‑based pieces on nutrition and obesity. I have delivered public talks for Pint of Science and British Science Week, and I regularly engage with public audiences on science communication topics. I also write for professional audiences, including articles about weight stigma for doctors.net
