I am a Clinical Assistant Professor (NIHR clinical lecturer) in Clinical Radiology, with a research interest in using advanced neuroimaging to understand brain health across ageing, dementia and mental health. I aim to develop imaging-based approaches that can identify early brain changes and support prevention-focused healthcare.
My research uses large-scale health datasets and advanced imaging to understand how general health relates to brain health across the life course. I am interested in how wider aspects of physical health, lifestyle, and the environment shape brain health over time. By linking brain imaging with cognitive, clinical, genetic, and population health data, my work aims to identify early markers of vulnerability and resilience. This approach allows us to study brain health both before disease develops and in people living with neurological or mental health conditions. The long-term goal is to develop imaging-based tools that can help monitor brain health, evaluate prevention strategies, and support earlier intervention. Ultimately, my research aims to use clinical imaging and big data to better understand how brain health can be maintained, protected, and improved in both health and disease.
"Hello! I'm Kallpana, an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and a clinical radiology trainee at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
I am currently recruiting patients for a research project under the supervision of Dr Steffi Thust using ultra-high-field 7-Tesla MRI to improve the diagnosis of brain lesions that are difficult to characterise on standard clinical scans. The study aims to enhance detection of subtle or MRI-occult disease, better distinguish tumours from non-neoplastic conditions, and more accurately map tumour behaviour and treatment effects. A key goal of this project is to refine these methods for translation onto routine hospital MRI scanners, ultimately improving diagnostic confidence and patient care in neuro-oncology."
