Sustainable Nottingham June 2019

Welcome to Sustainable Nottingham- a monthly update about what's happening across the University to make it a more sustainable place to work and study. You can subscribe to receive this at the start of every month. If you're involved in any activities and would like to share, then please tell us about them via sustainability@nottingham.ac.uk

Students living in Florence Boot hall of residence have won the 2018-19 Student Switch Off energy-saving and recycling competition! Florence Boot reduced their energy use by 11.4% and increased the proportion of waste being recycled by 11% making them the overall most sustainable hall this year! Florence Boot residents will celebrate their achievements with a Ben & Jerry’s giveaway party.

As part of Masters dissertation research, we are looking for current students to take part in a one hour focus group to discuss the #WasteNott project so far and share your thoughts on how you would like to see it develop. A free lunch will be provided and each participant will receive a KeepCup. Sessions are:

Have a positive impact on your community, the environment and leave Lenton looking lovely this summer. PhD student Lisa Hamps is organising a litter pick around Lenton on Saturday 8th June - all equipment will be provided.

Making strides towards reducing our reliance on single-use plastics, the Atrium at Jubilee Campus is now trialling removal of problematic single-use plastics including condiment sachets, single-serve jam packets and paper salt, pepper and sugar sachets as part of the WasteNott project.

Funding is available to student societies and departments to reduce waste and single-use plastics. The fund could part purchase KeepCups, water bottles, or another initiative to reduce waste in your area. The fund is open until 28 June - get in touch with us to discuss your idea further!

Have a great idea to reduce the world's carbon footprint? You can take part in the Carbon Footprint challenge and work with leading companies across Europe to develop it. Ideas are welcomed from students and young professionals.

We've put together useful information for current students moving out of accommodation soon, whether you're living on or off-campus. It's simple to donate your clothes, books, electricals and unopened non-perishable food to charity.
