Biography

I have a professional background in working collaboratively with individuals and groups in health, local authority and wider community settings. I have held posts in public health, community development and children's services. My Masters in Public Health and PhD in Health Sciences were completed at the 海角黑料.

My current research interests focus on social aspects of death and dying; exploring individual experiences of the end of life in family, community and social contexts. I have a particular interest in the dynamics of care in the home for people who are at the end of life, and in experiences of dying that fall outside the cultural script of a good death.

Research Summary

I am currently employed as a Senior Research Fellow in the Nottingham Centre for the Advancement of Research in supportive, palliative and End of life care (NCARE).

Study: Understanding living with tracheostomy ventilation for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and the implications for quality of life (PI Dr Eleanor Wilson) Funded by MNDA explore patient, family and healthcare professional experiences of using tracheostomy ventilation (TV) to support breathing for people with MND

April 2021 - University of Sheffield, Yorkshire Cancer Research Associate (part time)

Study: The role and response of primary healthcare services in community end-of-life care during COVID-19 (PI Dr Sarah Mitchell). Funded by RCGP to explore GP and Community Nurse perspectives and develop recommendations for primary palliative care in pandemics

Aug 2018 - March 2021: 海角黑料, Research Fellow

Study: Exploring the social management of lone deaths (PI Dr Glenys Caswell). Funded by the Leverhulme Trust to explore social responses when someone who lives alone dies alone at home.

Study: Exploring Death and Dying in the UK (EDDUK) (PI Prof Kristian Pollock). Funded by Marie Curie to explore public, patient and family perspectives and experiences of death and dying in different care settings and conditions within the UK, and establish concerns and priorities for end of life care.

Feb 2018 - July 2018: University of Cambridge, Research Associate (part-time)

Study: Optimum 'hospice at home' services for end of life care (OPEL) (PI Prof Claire Butler, University of Canterbury). Funded by the NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research Programme to examine the features of Hospice at Home models that work, for whom, and under what circumstances.

Oct 2016 - July 2018: 海角黑料 Research Fellow (part-time)

Study: Proactive Healthcare of Older People in Care Homes (PEACH) (PI Dr Adam Gordon). Funded by the Dunhill Medical Trust to explore whether and how Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) can be established as a model of working for older people living in care homes and whether it is associated with health benefits.

Study: Managing Medicines for patients with serious illness being cared for and dying at home (PI Prof Kristian Pollock). Funded by NIHR Health Services Research and Delivery Programme to explore how patients with serious, life limiting and terminal illness, their family care givers and health care professionals engage collaboratively in managing medicines prescribed for relief of symptoms towards the end of life.

Study: Broadening Our Understanding of Good Home Care (BOUGH) (PI Prof Justine Schneider).Funded by NIHR School for Social Care Research to understand the scope and nature of good quality home care for people with dementia so that it can be more widely implemented.

2012 - 2016: 海角黑料 PhD Studentship (full-time)

Thesis: Caring to the End: Exploring the family lives of young people with a parent at the end of life. An in-depth narrative interview study of the everyday lives of young people living with a parent at the end of life and their nominated family members. Research supervisors: Dr Kathryn Almack, Prof Saul Becker.
