Biography

Dr Hannah Degge is an Assistant Professor in Health Promotion and Public health, at the School of Health Sciences, Queen's Medical Centre.

Hannah began her professional journey as a pharmacist, upon graduation in 1990. She practiced first as a hospital pharmacist and then later switched to community pharmacy. While practicing as a community pharmacist, Hannah's passion for public health began to develop as she actively became more involved in community outreaches on health promotion and prevention.

Hannah worked as an onsite HIV/AIDS consultant for an international health agency (Global HIV/AIDS Initiatives in Nigeria/Family Health International, a USAID project). Her major responsibility in this role was to carry out onsite trainings on Antiretroviral Therapy (ARTs) management to hospital workers (Nurses, pharmacists, lab technologist, data entry staff) at various health facilities in Northern Nigeria communities that were providing comprehensive HIV/AIDS services or Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission care (PMTCT).

Hannah completed a Masters in Public Health in 2011, at the University of Leeds, and a PhD in 2018, at the University of Hull. The PhD research was on the topic 'Experiences of Women with Obstetric Fistula in Nigeria: a Narrative Inquiry'

In the last 13 years, Hannah has worked in various roles in higher education both for undergraduate and post-graduate studies; this includes lecturing; ethics lead; module lead; curriculum and course content developer for public health and healthcare management postgraduate studies. She has also carried out various international research projects. Hannah's interest in identifying and addressing the impact of social injustice on health outcomes for the vulnerable in the society, underpins her interest in public health, research, and health workforce development.

Hannah's research and learning interests are: maternal, adolescent & child health and wellbeing; epidemiology; community development; gender/ health inequalities; sexual and reproductive health; migrant health; global and environmental health

Hannah is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a registered practitioner with the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) UK, a member of the Institute of Health Promotion and Education and an affiliate member of the Chartered institute of Environmental Health
