Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE)

Develop your knowledge and skills in newborn physical examination 

Enhance your clinical practice with our Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) course, designed for registered midwives, nurses, and health visitors who wish to develop expertise in the examination of newborn infants. 

Aligned to the NHS England NIPE screening competencies, this course combines theory and practical learning to support you in developing the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to undertake and interpret the newborn physical examination safely and effectively. 

You will explore the principles underpinning newborn screening and gain hands-on experience in assessing: 

  • The philosophy and principles of newborn screening 
  • Examination of the head, including ophthalmic assessment 
  • Auscultation of the chest, including heart sounds 
  • Abdominal examination and palpation of the femoral pulses 
  • Assessment of the hips and limbs 
  • Examination of the external genitalia 
  • Recognition and assessment of common skin conditions 

Course Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the course, you will be able to: 

  • Compare normal and abnormal conditions that may present in the newborn. 
  • Evaluate your own competence in undertaking the newborn physical examination. 
  • Critically reflect on your confidence and decision-making, including arranging appropriate referrals. 
  • Evaluate the evidence base underpinning newborn physical examination practice. 
  • Select, utilise, and appraise the interpersonal skills required when examining newborn infants and supporting families. 
  • Critically appraise communication skills relevant to newborn physical examination and screening. 

Who is this course for? 

This course is suitable for: 

  • Registered midwives 
  • Registered nurses 
  • Health visitors

Applicants must be currently practising in a relevant clinical area and will be required to provide evidence of professional registration. 

Entry Requirements 

You must be a: 

  • Registered Midwife 
  • Registered Nurse, or 
  • Registered Health Visitor 

with current professional registration and experience in a relevant area of practice.
