Biography
SHARMILA SUMSUROOAH received the M.Sc. degree in electrical technology for renewable and sustainable energy systems in 2011, and the Ph.D. degree in robust stability analysis of power electronic systems in 2016, both from the 海角黑料, Nottingham, U.K. Her Ph.D. degree was undertaken in collaboration with the Center for Power Electronics Systems, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, USA. She is currently an Assistant Professor with the Power Electronics, Machines and Control Research Group of the 海角黑料. Her research interests include the design and optimisation of electrical power systems for aircraft applications, stability analysis and advanced energy management.
Expertise Summary
Dr Sharmila Sumsurooah is an Assistant Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the 海角黑料, specialising in electrical power systems for future green aircraft. She has contributed new modelling tools, stability鈥慳nalysis methods and supervisory鈥慶ontrol architectures through her leadership of major Clean Sky 2 projects, advancing methodologies for more electric aircraft and hybrid鈥慹lectric propulsion. She has authored over 30 publications across leading IEEE journals and international conferences in aircraft electrification. She supports the development of others through supervision of PhD and undergraduate students, high鈥憄erforming teaching, and her work as an ICF鈥慳ccredited coach supporting staff into leadership roles. She contributes to the wider research community as founder and lead of the international Solutions for Aircraft Electrification Leadership (SAEL) workshop series, keynote speaker, panellist, reviewer and conference organiser. Her engagement with policymakers, industry and the public-including COP26, Evidence Week in Parliament, Futureproof 2026 sustainability future forum and outreach selected for the University's 100 Ways to Change the World campaign-supports broader societal understanding of pathways to net鈥憐ero aviation.
Research Summary
- Road mapping of hybrid electric propulsion development as part of the IMOTHEP project
- Developing Electrical Power Systems for Highly Electrified Aircraft with industrial partner
