Simulated road traffic accident exercise on campus

Tuesday, 14 April 2026
This training exercise is due to take place on University Park campus.

On Tuesday 28 April the School of Health Sciences will run a large-scale simulation event in the car park between Trent Building and Portland Building. They will be working in collaboration with partners from Nottingham Fire and Rescue, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Nottinghamshire Police.

The road accident scene will be set up using two scrap cars. If you’re on campus, you may see emergency services vehicles and staff begin to assemble throughout the morning.

The simulation will begin at around 1.30pm at which point university staff, emergency services and actors playing the part of drivers and passengers will arrive at the scene.

The event will feature sirens as emergency vehicles arrive at the scene and begin work. There will also be some noise from vehicle engines, and a period of loud noise when cutting equipment is used to free the ‘trapped’ passengers from the cars. We hope that disruption from the event will be minimal, however it is important that the simulation looks and feels as real as possible.

The live simulation will last approximately one hour. Signage will be placed on the approach to the site from all directions warning of the event, and ensuring there is an opportunity to take another route for anyone who might find the scene upsetting or concerning.

This event is primarily intended for School of Health Sciences students observing from a designated area. However, all students are welcome to stop nearby and watch if interested.

This event was awarded Best Student Experience at the 2025 Student Nursing Times Awards and provides a great opportunity for students in healthcare subjects to see close-up how an emergency incident is handled by professionals.
