Carbon nanotube structures changed by 'attack' from within, researchers in the School of Chemistry discover

Description
A team of researchers from the School of Chemistry, including Dr Andrei Khlobystov, Dr Nick Besley and Dr Elena Bichoutskaia, in collaboration with Ulm University has shown for the first time that chemical reactions at the nano-level which change the structure of carbon nanotubes can be sparked by an 'attack' from within.

Chemistry Staff Receive Vice-Chancellor's Achievement Award

Description
Chemistry staff have been singled out as part of a new awards programme that recognises exceptional achievement at the University. Professor Martyn Poliakoff, Dr Peter Licence and Dr Samantha Tang are among the winners of the Vice-Chancellor's Achievement Awards 2010, for their joint work on a hugely popular film project that has received millions of hits on YouTube. More than 160 short films have been created as part of 'The Periodic Table of Videos', which has embraced social media to make an often-complex subject come alive for students, school pupils, teachers and myriad internet users.

School of Chemistry postgraduate student Kate Hamer will soon be briefing politicians on science and health matters at Westminster following the award of a BBSRC funded placement at the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST). The highly competitive selection process involved Kate writing a briefing document on 'legal highs' and a challenging panel interview.

Multidisciplinary group obtain MRC Milstein Fund Award

Description
Using a highly multidisciplinary approach, the research groups of Neil Thomas from the School of Chemistry in collaboration with Amalia Patan猫 and Lyudmila Turyanska (Physics & Astronomy) and Tracey Bradshaw (Pharmacy), together with researchers at Bristol University and Cadiz University, have harnessed the protein apoferritin, which naturally occurs in many organisms including humans to store iron ions, as a biocompatible label of healthy and diseased cells in in vivo imaging and a platform for the development of novel drug delivery vehicles
