MSc students stand along a metal-railed platform during a visit to Castle Rock Brewery, looking down into the brewing area where large stainless steel tanks and equipment are visible in an industrial interior with high windows.Master’s students and staff from Nottingham University Business School recently visited Castle Rock Brewery in Nottingham for an engaging industry visit, hosted at the brewery’s iconic pub and production hub, The Vat and Fiddle.

Led by Professor Jose Gonzalez Lopez, Assistant Professor in Inclusive Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Innovation, the visit brought together students from six postgraduate cohorts, highlighting strong cross-disciplinary interest in entrepreneurship, innovation, finance and management. The visit offered the opportunity to go behind the scenes of one of Nottingham’s best-known independent breweries, located just a short walk from Nottingham train station.

Castle Rock Brewery is widely recognised for its award-winning real ales, including Harvest Pale and Screech Owl, as well as for its commitment to community, collaboration and sustainability. Students began the visit with a guided tour of the brewery, learning about the brewing process and the operational challenges and innovations involved in modern craft brewing.

Managing Director Colin Wilde delivered a talk on the brewery’s history, values and business operations, providing first-hand insight into the drinks and hospitality sector. He reflected on the realities of running a successful independent business, including responding to changing consumer preferences, navigating economic uncertainty and operating in an increasingly competitive market.

The session provided valuable industry-facing insights, reinforcing the importance of strategic decision-making, innovation, and adaptability for long-term success. Students were able to connect academic theory with real-world practice through a lively Q & A and discussion session, before concluding the afternoon with a tasting session that brought the experience full circle.

Dr José Francisco González said:

Entrepreneurship and innovation are usually associated with organisations at the forefront of technological progress. However, companies like Castle Rock Brewery provide a more relatable story of entrepreneurial success. They demonstrate how passionate individuals identify entrepreneurial opportunities and create value by investing in their core competencies. The team at Castle Rock Brewery made the students feel welcomed and inspired, offering valuable insights for their future careers.
