Biography

Dr. Anthony Catton joined the School of Law as an Assistant Professor in 2026. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Exeter in 2014. He completed his LLM in Intellectual Property at Queen Mary University in 2016. And was awarded the Herchel Smith Scholarship to pursue his PhD at Queen Mary University. Prior to joining Nottingham, he has acted as a Teaching Associate and then Teaching Fellow at Queen Mary University, where he was the Module Convenor for Interactive Entertainment Law. Following this, he was a Guest Lecturer at University College London. He has taught on a range of modules including Interactive Entertainment Law, Copyright and Related Rights, Intellectual Property Law, Esports Law, and Law in Action.

Anthony chiefly specialises in Intellectual Property Law and Interactive Entertainment Law. His doctoral thesis adopted an interdisciplinary approach, and using ludology - a theory rooted in game studies, he assessed the shortcomings of copyright's analysis of interactive works. His past research has also examined the implications of collaborative technologies, end-user licenses agreements and their implications for copyright ownership, and on behalf of the UKIPO, contributed to a research report on the intellectual property concerns for the Metaverse.

Current Research

Anthony's primary research interests lie in Intellectual Property Law and Interactive Entertainment, however he has a wide range of broader research interests which include digital culture, virtual identity, platform governance, emerging technologies, game-based learning, and interdisciplinary approaches to legal research. Anthony is currently researching contemporary challenges with protecting virtual identity, and is examining how modern forms of digital indicia expose gaps in the patchwork protection of personality and personae. He is also currently co-authoring a book chapter on the legal implications of AI for the Esports Industry.
