His research team (Recovery Research Team - see https://www.researchintorecovery.com) is known for:

- creating the Connectedness, Hope, Identity, Meaning and Empowerment (CHIME) Framework, the most widely used theory base for understanding recovery processes

- developing the REFOCUS Intervention for mental health teams to increase their skills in supporting recovery

- developing the first-in-field Positive Psychotherapy for Psychosis intervention to improve wellbeing in people living with psychosis

- running the RECOLLECT Study, the world's largest study on Recovery Colleges

- creating the NEON Intervention using narratives to support recovery

- fostering a new academic discipline of citizen science for mental health.

Mike has written over 400 academic articles and published 15 books, including Personal Recovery and Mental Illness (2009), Partnering for Recovery in Mental Health (2014), Positive Psychotherapy for Psychosis (2017), Wellbeing, Recovery and Mental Health (2017) and Camberwell Assessment of Need, 2nd edition (2020). In 2022 his NEON Programme (https://www.researchintorecovery.com/research/neon) won the annual NIHR CRN, McPin and MQ: Mental Health Research Service User and Carer Involvement in Mental Health Research Award. The judging panel were particularly impressed by how the NEON study team had truly permeated service user and carer involvement into every phase of the study, from inception to dissemination and their inclusive recruitment process.

In 2024 Mike was awarded the Monte Shapiro Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Psychological Society Division of Clinical Psychology. This is an award for clinical psychologists who have achieved eminence in the profession, through an outstanding and widely recognised contribution to the development of clinical psychology, impact/innovation on the knowledge, policy and/or practice of clinical psychology, and leadership/management involvement and influence with professional bodies, governmental bodies, service delivery organisations and higher education institutions.

In 2026 Mike was appointed National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator (2026-2030). The NIHR Senior Investigator award recognises the most prominent and prestigious researchers of applied health and social care. The 200 Senior Investigators help shape the direction of health, and social care and public health research in the UK.

Mike came to mental health research via computer science, mental health nursing, clinical psychology and psychiatric research.
