Biography

Nick has been teaching since 1994 in a variety of roles and contexts both in the UK and overseas. He spent 11 years as an English language teacher in Cambodia and 12 years in the UAE. Since returning to the UK in 2017, he has taught English at the University of Sheffield and worked developing online learning materials for the Chartered Management Institute. He joined the 海角黑料 in 2019 as a Learning Technology Consultant before transferring to CELE to teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in 2022.

Nick is an Assistant Professor in English for Academic Purposes. He holds a PhD in Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) from the University of Lancaster, an MEd in Education Technology from the University of Southern Queensland, an MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from the University of Reading, as well as a PGCHE and a Diploma in TESOL. Nick is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. In addition to teaching English, Nick has held a variety of leadership positions and served as Chair of General Studies at Dubai Men's College from 2014 to 2017.

Expertise Summary

Nick's main area of expertise is the adoption and use of learning technology with a particular interest in the enablers and barriers that shape learning technology adoption. His work focuses on the intersection between learning technology and psychological traits such as empathy, motivation, and instrumentality.

Methodologically, Nick works within a Critical Realist framework and specialises in applying the Morphogenetic Approach to the study of agency and decision-making. He is also a grounded theorist with a particular interest in the use of Straussian Grounded Theory as a means of developing new insights, understandings, and theoretical contributions. He welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD candidates whose interests align with these areas.

Since joining the School of Education and CELE in 2022, Nick has taught and led on a variety of EAP courses, primarily on the pre-sessional program, and has also contributed to a range of in-sessional courses. As part of the Nottingham Advantage Award, he co-wrote and teaches An Introduction to Coding (NAA 1749). He also advises teachers undertaking the PGCHE module Developing Digital Learning Environments (EDUC4262) and mentors candidates working towards Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
